You are four times more likely to die from an asteroid impact in your lifetime than to be struck by lightning. Naked Science tracks down the scientists who are actively doing something about this threat, from amateur asteroid hunters counting every asteroid and comet, to research scientists desperately working on ways to alter the orbit of these planet-killers. Naked Science meets the scientists of the B612 project who believe they may have the answer. Their aim is to send a spacecraft to land on a near earth asteroid and gently nudge it along, changing the asteroid's orbit. Hopefully, it shouldn't take much of a push to turn a global killer into a harmless lump of rock. Will it work? Can we avert a global disaster? And more importantly, when will this day come?
